Jonas and Sarah Maby believed that schooling was very important for their family.  Their eldest son Joseph Haine kept a grammar book, see below.  The back of a photograph of Mary records that she had been finely educated in a private girls' school.  Sarah made mention of her younger brothers being still at school in her letters of around 1840.
Thomas, William, Sarah and their mother became Methodists in the Spring of 1840.  A year later in Ohio, Mary joined the Church.  When Mary went to the U.S., her younger brothers were considered too young to join her, accounts varying as to the success of the young folk overseas.

The Mabys moved from Ditcheat to Snagg Farm, Lamyatt by 1836.  "Your mother is looking extremely well, and getting very stout", wrote Joseph's wife Harriet to Mary in 1840.
