Obituary: Rev. Dr. Frederick Alfred Gunner, was born 21 Nov 1823 in Clapham, Surrey, England, and died 3 Nov 1897 at his residence on Division St., Listowell, Ontario, Canada. He married Elizabeth Owen Scott of Camden, New Jersey, USA, and they had 6 children, all but Lilian M. predeceasing him. His obituary in the Listowel Standard, 5 Nov 1897, states that he "early in life became interested in religious matters. Coming to America when a young man, he engaged in business for a time, but feeling especially called to the work of the ministry, he left his business pursuits, completed his education and entered the ministry. During his early life he became greatly interested in the Second Advent movement, which at that time was attracting much attention, and much of his ministerial career was spent in laboring among the Second Advent churches in the New England States and in Quebec and Ontario. He was president of the Evangelical Advent Conference for 25 years. In 1883 he came to Listowel in response to a call tendered him by the Congregational church. Here he labored for about five years, when owing to ill health, he was forced to resign the pastorate. During his active life Mr. Gunner studied medicine and graduated as a medical practitioner from the Philadelphia Medical College, using his medical skill in his pastoral duties. Of late years he has occasionally been engaged in evangelistic work, but his failing health has prevented him from active service. He was revered by all who knew him. His daughter Lillian, who is the only surviving member of the family, has the community's sympathy. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon to Fairview cemetery."
The obituary in the Listowel Banner, 4 Nov 1897, states that he died after a short illness, that he had begun his education in England, that Lillian had always lived with her parents, and that in connection with his ministerial duties he had worked in a number of places in Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Minnesota, and in the Eastern townships of Quebec and in Ontario. Also, that he had been elected President for twenty-five successive years by his brethren in the Advent Church. His funeral was to be conducted by Rev. M. Kelly.
