September 1953 Cumberland & Westmorland Herald POOLEY BRIDGE - Officials at Ullswater sports at Pooley Bridge included 82-year-old Mr. W. B. Fawcett, Sandford, Warcop (and formerly of Elderbeck, Pooley Bridge), who had attended the last 56 meetings and was a former secretary of the sports. There was a surprise in the fell race, with the redoubtable Bill Teasdale, Caldbeck, being beaten into second place by Michael Glen, Bathgate, Scotland, who was primarily a mile runner. George Gelleburn, Catterlen, won the local wrestling, and Geoffrey Wilson, Plumpton, the lightweight class. There were 3,000 spectators.
